Gonzalo Lizarralde email

Gonzalo Lizarralde’s work has significantly contributed to current debates about climate change action, the role of informality in project governance, the usefulness of the resilience framework, the impacts of rapid urban transformation, and low-cost housing in developing countries. He holds the Fayolle-Magil Construction Research Chair in Architecture, the Built Environment and Sustainability at the Université de Montréal. He is also the director of the IF Research Group (GRIF), the director of the Canadian Disaster Resilience and Sustainable Reconstruction Research Alliance (Œuvre durable) and one of the founders of i-Rec, an international network of specialists in disaster risk reduction and reconstruction. He is the author of the books Unnatural Disasters: Why Most Responses to Risk and Climate Change Fail but Some Succeed; The Invisible Houses: Rethinking and Designing Low-Cost Housing in Developing Countries; and co-editor of Rebuilding after Disasters. In 2016, he became a Member of the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada.

Benjamin Herazo email

Benjamin Herazo is a Research Advisor at the School of Architecture (Faculté de l'aménagement UdeM), where he coordinates the SUSTENTO project (Enhancing the resilience of alternative food systems), the Chaire Fayolle-Magil projects and previously the ADAPTO project (Climate Change Adaptation in Informal Settings), among others. He holds a doctorate from the Université de Montréal's Faculté de l'aménagement, as well as a bachelor's degree in architecture and a master's degree in economics. With 25 years' experience as Associate Professor, Director and Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Studies at Javeriana University in Colombia, he has also acquired significant experience in architectural firms, as a consultant and researcher in environmental management. His doctoral thesis focused on how sustainable development contributes to the alignment between strategic and tactical management in the construction sector.

Daniel Pearl (Also a member of the Chair) email

Daniel Pearl explores interdisciplinary design issues from a theoretical and practical standpoint. His studies are in a rather conventional interdisciplinary perspective, particularly at the intersection of building science and architectural design, with the goal of understanding how these two disciplines overlap, from design to construction. However, due to the need for a deep understanding of both the environmental footprint and the ins and outs of the urban development of a sustainable neighbourhood, the interdisciplinary study must extend beyond the fields of engineering and architecture.

 

 
Anne Marchand email

Anne Marchand is an industrial designer with a general interest in the theory and practice of sustainable design. Her research focuses on the creation of products for the responsible and cultural consumption markets, the integration of artisanal and industrial production scales, design and innovation as a means of reinterpreting and reappropriating culture, and the renewal of traditional knowledge and know-how.

 

 
Carlo Carbone email

Carlo Carbone is an architect in Montréal since 1998 and professor of environmental design at the Université du Québec à Montréal’s School of Design. He . He has been practicing architecture in Montréal since 1998 and has taught architectural design, design-build and construction science courses at the graduate level since 2001. His research focuses on the history of prefabrication, the links between industrialization and the culture of modern buildings, house prefabrication and the current state of industrialized construction systems, particularly their potential personalization by users, builders and architects.

Carmela Cucuzzella (chairs the committee) email

Her academic career began at Concordia University, where she obtained a degree in computer science and a bachelor's degree in design in 2005. Her education then led her to Université de Montréal, where she obtained a Master of Applied Science in Planning, with an option in Design and Complexity, at the School of Design. She then completed a doctorate in planning. Ms. Cucuzzella's research focuses on sustainable design and environmental assessment systems. She has been actively involved in the United Nations Environment Program's Life Cycle Initiative as a social life cycle expert. Her work also encompasses the design of public places, the analysis of urban morphology to improve the public transport experience, and more recently, the evaluation of the quality of urban space from the point of view of health and aging populations.

 

 
Donald Tremblay email

Donald Tremblay is Director of Grants and Communications. Within the Office of Research (BRDV), he leads a team of advisors whose mission is to assist professors at the Université de Montréal and affiliated centers in their grant applications (pre-award) and in the administrative management of their grants (post-award).

 

 
Izabel Amaral email

Director of the School of Architecture since June 1, 2021, Izabel Amaral was a professor at the McEwen School of Architecture at Laurentian University in Sudbury from 2016 to 2021. Trained as an architect in Brazil, she practiced architecture there for several years before coming to Canada in 2005 to begin her doctoral studies in the Faculty of Planning. Pedagogically, she is responsible for the Master of Architecture degree and coordinates the optional workshops of the third year of the Bachelor of Architecture degree.

 

 
Clément Demers email

After a fifteen-year career with the City of Montréal, where he was Deputy Director of the Planning Department and Assistant Director of the Housing and Urban Development Department, Clément Demers was the head of the Société immobilière du patrimoine architectural de Montréal (SIMPA) for six years. SIMPA has completed office buildings, condominium and hotel projects, and cultural facilities totaling more than $400 million (1994), acting independently or in partnerships. These projects, including the Pointe-à-Callière Museum, the Montréal World Trade Center, the InterContinental Hotel, the Chaussegros-de-Léry Complex, the Bagg, Cuvillier-Ostell and Le 1 McGill condominiums, have been awarded approximately fifteen renowned prizes.

 

Anik Shooner email

Anik Shooner graduated from the Université de Montréal’s School of Architecture in 1987 and is co-founder of the firm Menkès Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux Architects. She has been involved in many large and complex projects that have required exceptional leadership and a keen sense of organization. Convinced that the architectural quality of our environment influences our lives, her practice reflects how her commitment to sustainable development is an integral part of her quest for excellence. For more than twenty years, her creativity, proven knowledge and mastery of the architectural project have defined her professional approach, which includes projects praised by architectural reviews.

 

 
Raphaël Fischler (Chaired the committee from 2019-2023) email

Raphaël Fischler has had a career combining research, teaching, professional practice and administration since 1994. He was trained in architecture and urban planning at the Eindhoven University of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completed his doctoral studies in urban and regional planning and social sciences at UC Berkeley. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, he became a professor at the School of Urban Planning at McGill University, where he was director for more than six years and director of graduate studies for some 15 years. He also led planning and reflection projects at the Faculty of Engineering and at McGill University. He has served as Dean of the Faculty of Planning since June 1, 2018.

The Chair has a collaborative structure between members, who have diverse profiles and interests. Members assist the Chairholder in identifying relevant research areas and initiatives. They also suggest or participate in research projects supported by the Chair, becoming its scientific core.



 


Jean-Marc Weill email

Jean-Marc Weill is an architect and engineer. A 1989 graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Nancy, he also obtained a Master's degree in Design Studies from the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1990, and a Civil Engineering diploma from the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in 1999. In 2012, the Académie d'Architecture honored his achievements by awarding him the Prize in the Research and Technique category. Since 2003, he has headed C&E Architecture et Ingénierie, working on projects such as the development of Ultra High Performance Fiber Concrete structures, seismic strengthening of buildings, the design of crossing structures, and the construction of housing and facilities. His current focus is on wood, bamboo, earth, hybrid and reversible structures, as well as those derived from reuse. In addition to his practical involvement, Jean-Marc Weill shares his expertise by teaching at various institutions, notably the École d'architecture de la ville & des territoires de Marne-la-Vallée.

 
Jean-Jacques Terrin email

Jean-Jacques Terrin has extensive professional experience in architecture and urban planning projects in France and abroad (1972-1996). In addition, he has been involved in numerous research projects, including the “Program Design” program at the PUCA, Plan Urbanisme Construction Architecture (1996-2001). During this period, he also served as general delegate of Europan France. He created and headed the Urban Systems Engineering Department at the Université de Technologie de Compiègne (1998-2003). He actively participated in the European IP City research project (2006-2011). He was the scientific leader of POPSU Europe, an observation platform for urban projects in Europe (PUCA and Atelier International du Grand Paris, 2008-2012). Since 2013, he works as an expert for the EU program Urbact. He coordinates research on sustainable development issues as drivers of innovation for architectural and urban design for the PUCA and the Institut CDC pour la Recherche, especially in mid-sized cities (2012-2018).

 
 
David Ross email

David Ross is a project manager for major projects carried out by the City of Montréal. A member of the Ordre des urbanistes du Québec and a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), he has been working in the municipal sector for fifteen years, managing large, complex and innovative urban projects since 2006. He also teaches at the Université de Montréal, where he shares his passion for urban and project management with the architects, planners, and project managers of tomorrow.

 


 
Thomas Schweitzer email

TThomas Schweitzer is an architect and joined Ædifica in 2006 after twenty-two years with Dan S. Hanganu. He heads the architectural department and is responsible for architectural design. He has extensive experience as a designer, planner, and manager of all project types and sizes. His passion for the profession and his intellectual rigor fuel his reflection on the future of contemporary architecture. His inseparable qualities translate into concepts that harmoniously integrate constructive systems to ensure exemplary executions. He has been a guest critic at numerous universities including McGill, Montréal, Paris Val-de-Seine, and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and has been a lecturer at the Université du Québec à Montréal’s School of Design for ten years.



 
 
Jean-Paul Boudreau email

Jean-Paul Boudreau is an architect and member of the OAQ. He established his practice in 1997 under the name of JPB Architects while maintaining a regular collaboration with major national and international projects, including the new Benghazi Airport in Libya, a 750,000,000 Euro project. Since 2009, he has provided support and expertise in the fields of planning, reconstruction and management of architectural projects in developing countries. He is currently working as a project architect with the Haitian government and the French Development Agency for the reconstruction of the largest public hospital in Haiti, l’Hôpital Universitaire d'État d’Haïti. He is a deeply experienced project architect who has developed outstanding skills in various areas such as architecture, urban design, environment, and landscape. He divides his professional practice between university teaching and research, where he focuses on further examining the evolution of architectural practice in the current environmental crisis.

 

Anne-Marie Petter email

Anne-Marie has a background in architecture (B.A., 1994) and in project management (M.Sc. A., 2008). Prior to her doctoral studies, which began in 2015, she had a 20-year career in private practice, working on projects of various types and sizes in Quebec, the United States and Haiti. Since 2008, she has been managing large-scale institutional projects, including the Maison symphonique de Montréal and two hospitals in Haiti, where she was director of operations for Ædifica Sud, an architecture and urban planning firm in Port-au-Prince. Interested in better understanding the context of intervention and contributing in a different way, she temporarily put her practice on hold and devoted herself to research. Her interests lie in the self-organization of communities in an informal urban context, and her thesis deals with the production of public space in a self-urbanized city on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. In parallel to her thesis, Anne-Marie is a research assistant for the Fayolle-Magil Construction Chair. Since 2015 she has collaborated on two research mandates on urbanization issues in Port-au-Prince. She has also been a teaching assistant in three master's workshops in architecture, two in Cuba and one in Haiti.
 


Ricardo Leoto email

Ricardo Leoto has a multidisciplinary background in architecture, urban planning and project management. He has 22 years' experience as an architect, sustainable building consultant and participatory project manager, including 5 years as director of AR2 ingénierie. As a consultant and lecturer for Équiterre since 2010, he has participated in the creation of the Maison du développement durable and its interpretation center (Musée interactif bâtiment durable). As a consultant, he has proposed and implemented sustainable development strategies, programs and projects for some thirty clients (financed by FAQDD). Ricardo is interested in the impact of the Integrated Design process on the realization of innovative projects in terms of environmental and social responsibility (energy efficiency and GHG). He holds a doctorate from the Université de Montréal's Faculté de l'aménagement.

Arturo Valladares email

Arturo Valladares is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the School of Architecture, Université de Montréal. His research interests are located at the intersection between emotions, mental health, and the built environment. Also, he has worked in projects looking at collaboration between different stakeholders in the production of the habitat and has conducted fieldwork in Canada, Cuba, México, and Nicaragua. In 2017, he received his PhD from McGill University. In addition, he has backgrounds in urban planning and political science. So far, he has authored four articles in peer review journals. His most recent contribution to knowledge is titled "From scary places to therapeutic landscapes : Voices from the community of people living with schizophrenia".

 

Sara Rankoni (2023) email

Sara Rankohi is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Fayolle-Magil Chair. Her research interests are concentrated on collaborative design and delivery methods for the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. In addition, she is a postdoctoral fellow at Jarislowsky / SNC-Lavalin Research Chair at Polytechnic Montreal, where she studies the intersection between project governance and sustainability. She holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, a master’s degree in sustainable design and environmental engineering, and a master's degree in construction engineering and project management. In 2022, she completed her PhD at Polytechnique Montréal, the faculty of mathematics and industrial engineering, jointly with the construction engineering department at École de technologie supérieure.

 

David Smith (2020-2022) email

David Smith is an architect and a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Montréal’s School of Architecture. His research interests are located in the intersections between the built environment and food security, livelihoods, disaster risk reduction and collaborative governance. He holds a master’s in architecture from Laval University in Canada and a master’s in development and emergency practice from Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom. David was an assistant professor and completed his PhD at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Norway. His doctoral thesis is titled ‘Marketplaces as critical urban infrastructure: relational attributes and disaster resilience from the perspectives of traders and customers in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’.

Holmes Páez (2023) email

Holmes Páez is an associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia. He has more than six years of teaching experience in construction management and has significant research and teaching experience in the areas of construction productivity, Building Information Modelling (BIM), project management, and organizational studies and economy in the construction industry. From 2003 to 2015, he worked as a project manager, consultant, and accredited engineer in four leading companies: Norco S.A., ConConcreto S.A., Flowtite S.A., and Maersk Sealand.
